Chapter Nine

Charlie was biting his lips with nerves. He clung onto Will’s hand tightly as they walked towards the wolf village. He hated every moment of it, wishing that things could be different All he wanted was for them to have a good, calm life together, but Brandon seemed to be opposed to that. Charlie had to face the idea that Will wouldn’t come back from this, and he honestly didn’t know what he was going to do. All Charlie had ever wanted was to be a father, but although he would still have Thomas that wasn’t enough. Being part of a loving family was more important, and without Will the family was going to be incomplete.

Charlie understood why Will was doing this of course, and he wasn’t going to get in Will’s way. He wouldn’t be a very good partner if that happened. His blood boiled with anger towards Brandon as well, and Charlie wished he had the ability to shift into a wolf so that he could join in the fight, but alas he was just a weak human, and there was nothing he could do but wait and hope that Will would win. That was the worst of it really, the feeling of being helpless when Will was risking everything. They were a couple and were supposed to be in this together, but right now Charlie felt alone.

He had to be strong for Thomas as well, and he hoped that if the moment came, he would be ready to run and could escape Brandon’s wrath. Even thinking about Will dying was enough to break Charlie though, and he had to make a serious effort to blink back his tears and not show any sign of weakness. He didn’t want Brandon to see his fear.

The last time Charlie had approached the village he had been just about as nervous as he was now, although at that time he had been nervous because Will was coming back from exile, determined to prove his parents wrong. Charlie hadn’t know what to expect, and he wished that they could have all gotten along without the interference from Brandon. Will’s father and mother had accepted Charlie and the four of them were going to be a family. At that time the only big worry for Charlie had been whether he was going to be willing to leave his home and live out here. That option had been taken away from him, and now he didn’t know what lay in wait for him.

“Remember what I told you,” Will said as they saw the wispy smoke rising from the small huts, “if at any point you’re in danger and I can’t come to defend you, just run and get back to Thomas.”

Charlie nodded, although he hoped it wouldn’t come to that. As they grew closer Charlie experienced a sharp intake of breath. There was a gloom over the community. Even though the sky was bright it seemed as though everyone was miserable. Where before
